He addressed the gathering by saying, "Sisters and Brothers of America." The audience gave him a big round of applause for his opening remarks as it was unusual. He is overjoyed and speechless at the warm and cordial welcome given by Americans. He expresses his heartfelt thanks to all the participants in the name of the mother of religions and millions of Hindus. He further thanks the delegates from the far-off eastern countries for claiming that their land has the power to tolerate different ideologies.

He feels proud to belong to a religion that has taught the world both tolerance and universal acceptance. Swami Vivekananda feels proud to be an Indian, as it has sheltered Israelites and Zoroastrians in their difficult times. When Roman Tyranny shattered their holy temple into pieces, Israelites fled to South India and sought shelter with Indians. He quotes a few lines from a hymn that he recalls hearing repeated in his childhood, and that millions of people repeat every day. He adds that all religions have the same goal but different paths. According to Swami Vivekananda, just as different streams, born of different sources, flow into the sea, the different religious paths that the people tread will lead to one God. Fanaticism, fundamentalism, and sectarianism have been tormenting this earth for so long. These evils, according to Vivekananda, were obstacles to human progress and spiritual realization, and he called for their eradication through education, enlightenment, and a deeper understanding of spiritual truths that transcend superficial differences. His message was one of universal brotherhood, tolerance, and the pursuit of truth and righteousness. He hopes that the bell that tolled this morning will be a warning signal to end fanaticism.

After his excellent speech, Swami Vivekananda received a two-minute standing ovation.
