Question:- Describe the visit of Lomov to the house of the Chubukovs. What was the purpose of his visit and was it served?( KU July 2022 carona paper)

The Proposal is a one-act play written by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov in 1888–89 and first performed in 1890. Chekhov presents a message to society: heated arguments in a relationship, especially in love and marriage, ruin the relationship. The play revolves around three characters: Chubokov, a wealthy landowner; Lomov, a 35-year-old wealthy neighbour; and Natalya, the daughter of Chubokov. The play begins with the entry of well-dressed Lemov into the house of Chubukov to seek the hand of Natalya in marriage. Chubukov thinks that Lomov has come for money but soon realises that his intention is to marry Natalya. Chubukov happily accepts the proposal and leaves with lots of excitement to call his daughter. Lomov believes that Natalya is well educated and an excellent housekeeper. He is an anxious man and gets upset easily. Lomov begins the conversation with Natalya, speaking about their families' friendship. He mentions Oxen Meadows, the disputed land of both families. Natalya strongly rejects his claim to the land and says that it is her property. They both have heated arguments on the Oxen Meadows property. Lemov yells at both the father and daughter, saying he would go to court with the evidence that the land belongs to the Lomovs, and suddenly Lomov suffers from palpitations. Chubokov and Natalya both threw Lomov out of their house.

Chubokov reveals Lomov's marriage proposal to Natalya. Upon hearing this, Natalya regrets her behaviour with Lomov and asks his father to bring him back home. Lomov comes back, and they both begin a conversation about their dogs. Soon, Natalya starts quarrelling over the dogs' issue, saying that her dog Squeezer is better than his dog, Guess. The situation worsens with the interference of Chubukov, and Lomov faints from the palpitations. Natalya starts weeping, thinking that Lomov has died. Lomov gains consciousness after drinking some water. Chubukov immediately gives Natalya's hand to Lomov and blesses them as a wedding couple. They both agree to marry, but they continue quarrelling over the petty issue with adamant behaviour.
