Brief Review on Kushwanth Singh's novel The Company of women

Brief Review

The Company of Women- novel by Khushwant Singh

The novel is about Mohan, the protagonist’s romantic and exciting adventure for a woman who makes him happy and wants a woman for his unquenchable thirst for lust. Mohan was a sex maniac. He married Sonu because she was beddable enough. To him sex was the more pressing need than love or companionship. The matter of  sex is a paramount He states “love is an elusive concept.”
So we regard him as a lustful man without any emotions. His relationships were not meant to be enduring; there were no strings attached. This was very clear to us when Sarojini liked to take over the household; he ignored her and she was put in her place. In this episode, he was a little bit emotional and wanted her to be with him for at least three months until college reopened. Sarojini realised that they were living in a fool's paradise built by them.

The only positive aspect of this novel is that the writer warns womanisers of this dreadful disease.

I don’t understand why the writer wants to emphasize the relationship between size and sexual power of the big thing and is trying to  put a wrong notion into the minds of the readers. The writer repeatedly use the same dialogue “how big is yours “with all women characters . They gasp with pleasure at his big cock and crazy for it.

Mohan thought his friendship with Jessica would last as long as he was in the U.S.A. Mohan might continue his relationship if she had not slapped him, accusing him of Indian possessiveness.

This incident led him to explore the bodies of girls belonged to various nationalities. I feel that Mohan had not been bedded  with so many girls  on  campus  if Jessica would not have left him.
Khushwanth Singh pointed out that the only reason or failure of married life was Mohan’s nagging and ill-tempered wife and showed her in a poor light. He was convinced that occasional adultery did not destroy a marriage .Did his adultery save his  marriage?
Adultery ,excessive sexual urge and treating woman as a sexual object might be the reasons for divorce . Both are equally held responsible for the break down of the marriage .Readers are eager to know the woman who he is going to sleep with him in the next episode while reading .
No humour, serious tone and mystery in the book. Sexually explicit content is  used .So we can brand as an adult  book, written with no aim and purpose except make Indian adult readers satisfy. All he wanted to say and prove is “lust is the true foundation of love”, but Protagonist uncontrollable passion led  him to tragic death. To some extent I too agree with his remark, because many a couple in India , a country known for values, lead their married  life for years together  mechanically without any love towards each other , like Mohan ‘s loveless sex with his wife.
